Sencer Vardarman’s works, 2003
– current, deal with contemporary visual culture. He researches
on the questions of how reporters, scientists, designers and advertisers
use images (video. photography and graphics) following their own
interests; how certain images manipulate the perception of viewers.
How the images are modified and charged with spesific aesthetic
codes, so the content has calculated effects on the public eye.
Each of Vardaman’s series is built out of a selection of
found images and information.
Vardarman also adopts the methods of his sources; he transforms
their aesthetic codes within the process of his own image making
and invents coherent new images. His work is based on artistic
news and artistic research.
In this way, Vardarman engages the viewers into watching the
primary effects of these scenarios which impose confusion or fascination.
The secondary effect is the re-evaluation of the facts, which
are given within the scenes.
Vardarman’s artistic news are in fact the combination of
the fragments of several mass-media images which originally represent
catastrophes or landscapes. Vardarman transforms the designed
effects of these media materials into attractive sceneries. In
his hands, the terrible catastrophes or ordinary landscapes become
magnificent beautiful but alien scenarios.
In his artistic research works, analyzing the information about
i.e. industry, history or urban culture, Vardarman uses similar
methods; he displays several series of images in a way they look
credible for the viewer. The aesthetics of the arrangements also
create reconciliation in between the images and the viewer. The
viewers get engaged in re-evaluating the information that is to
think about the use and the meaning of these images and matter
of their creations.
Vardarman has begun “berlinerpool” in 2005 as a participatory
art project. His intention was to create a social body in participation
with practicing artists, so that the content, including the participating
artist, their endeavour and artworks, can be transformed into
a collective artwork via the properties of continues act of translations.
Through out that journey, unintentionally “berlinerpool”
has also been structured in a form of an organism, deals practical
needs of artists, curators and institutions. (www.berlinerpool.de,
