CURRENCY GENEALOGY
5 Digital Prints, size variable, 2007 - 2009

Currency Genealogy presents the currencies as family trees due to their historical and etymological connections, showing the relations between several civilizations, which helped identify the power structures between the communities that produced the currency, Vardarman’s genealogy exposes relationships between things that is not possible on a “real” scale. The linkage between the currencies serves to remind viewers of the artificial nature of any such classification, be it humans or currencies. The linkage between cultures that produce different currencies is in a way a method of writing history, revealing different societies dealt with similar problematics in parallel ways. For example, Rome’s Grossus, Austria’s Grosschen and Turkey’s Kuruş are successors of each other.
