CITY MINIMALISM - II
Digital prints, 30x30cm each, work in progress since 2014
City Minimalism II is based on abstractions of road maps. The roads in a city are a combination of planning and growth as some roads are created around structures. These maps are often the maps we encounter to be able to navigate cities, both as pedestrians and as drivers and are thus targeted for a more immediate user experience that transcends time. The ways in which roads are organized within a city can be strikingly disparate as the principles of urbanization have dramatically changed over the course of history and the ways in which cities sprawl also depend on geographic context. The concentrations roads and the manners in which these roads are located coincide with the lived experience of being in a city differently than the abstractions of the subway maps. When comparing the images from City Minimalism I and City Minimalism II, which show the roads of a city, the dissimilarities can tell a lot about how the city came to be.
