CITY MINIMALISM - I
Digital prints, 30x30cm each, 2014
City Minimalism I is based on abstractions of subway maps. The subway networks are revealing of a city’s relationship to infrastructure and are key components of urban dwellings. As these networks are often invisible from the street level and are often underground, they show how a city is organized, highlighting ways and directions in which it can grow. The straightness of the subway lines also point to an invisible connection between places that might appear disparate above the ground, creating links and intersections that might not be visible while inhabiting the city above ground. Thus, City Minimalism I hosts both what cities are and what they can become. When comparing the images from City Minimalism I and City Minimalism II, which show the roads of a city, the dissimilarities can tell a lot about how the city came to be.
